After having her heart broken by the only man she’s ever loved, everything seemed to go downhill for Emerson Grace. It’s taken years, but Emmy is finally starting to pick up the pieces of her broken life. Until the man who destroyed her heart returns, bringing with him the pain of the past.

Running from Emmy was the only way Lucas Allen knew he could protect her from the demons he carried with him. After spending one perfect night together, Luke took off, certain he couldn’t possibly give Emmy everything she deserved. Eight long years later, he’s returned to Cloverleaf to try and make up for his mistakes. He can only hope it isn’t too late.

Loving Luke has always been easy. It’s forgiving him that seems impossible. Now it’s up to Emmy to decide whether to give him a second chance, or let him go for good.

The plot was good. It mostly kept my interest. Emmy was likable but Luke wasn't at all. He was a whiny egotistical rude jerk with nothing admirable about him at all. I didn't want Emmy to even end up with him. His reasoning for treating her like crap and leaving was ridiculous by any standard and not believable. Usually when you find out why someone does something like that you're like oh ok that's so understandable and sad. but his reasoning left me going what the hell? There has to be more to it. I'll keep reading because there has to be more to it. Nope. Secondly he called other women bitches. That's not attractive or sexy at all and made me hate him. He treated her friend horribly and appeared to have no respect for her. Savannah loved and took care of Emmy when he was too much of a jerk to even bother. He should show her respect just for that alone. Telling Emmy he owned her, that he refused to let her leave, was going to ring her neck or put her over his knee made me angry but all the women in the book were orgasmic over it? Seriously? But what enraged me the most was the "lust" she felt when Emmy and Luke were at their daughters grave. He had very little devastation over his daughters death. I stopped reading and won't read anymore books by this author. Shame on the author for doing that! A romance is supposed to make you feel passion and love but I repeatedly felt anger. What he did was not forgivable. And how in the hell did he line up the blow job right when Emmy walked in? "I did that so you'd let me go"..so ridiculous. Emmy should've ended up with Brett if anything. I never leave reviews but this book left me so disgusted.

Picking up the Pieces Cloverleaf Book 1 edition by Jessica Prince Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

Picking Up the Pieces (Cloverleaf Book 1) by Jessica Prince is a friends to enemies to lovers, contemporary, small-town romance told in dual POV and moving back and forth between scenes from the past to the present.

The story follows former best friends, Emerson (Emmy) and Luke. When Emmy graduated high school Luke enlisted in the marines, but before leaving he ruthlessly and intentionally shattered her heart. Then he disappeared never to be heard from again.

Until now.

It's now eight years later and Luke has returned to town determined to gain forgiveness from Emmy and his former group of friends. But he wants much more than just forgiveness. Luke wants Emmy in every way and he's determined to make her his.

As the author's debut book, it was a solid start. I found the storyline entertaining, but I wasn't crazy about the main characters. Luke was an entitled, controlling jerk and his behavior at times crossed the line from alpha into abusive. Emmy should have been a stronger character after having overcome so much in her life, but she was weak where Luke was concerned. It was unbelievable that she would want to be with him after everything he put her through.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. I liked the supporting characters much better than the main characters, so I'll most likely check out the other books in the series.
Overall Opinion This was a 3 solid "just ok" stars read. I was expecting more out of this because of the reviews, but I was kind of disappointed. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. It will probably be one that I will not remember down the line, but as a side note -- it did have a great ensemble of friends as supporting characters.

Storyline This is Emerson and Luke's story. They met when Luke moved down the street when he was 6 and she was 4 and they became best friends. After Emmy graduated high school, Luke drops the bomb that he has enlisted to be a marine. Emmy is upset, but understands since she is off to college and he has a dysfunctional family (abusive father that took off when he was 16 and an alcoholic mother) that he would have to stay with. Their last night together things take a turn and Luke takes Emmy's virginity. He makes a huge mistake and leaves to never be heard from again (by anyone) for 8 years. When Luke returns to his hometown he doesn't receive the best welcoming. His group of friends, the rest of the town, and Emmy all are not please to see him and he realizes that he has a lot of work to do to win them back. After some hard work, Luke gets through and eventually learns about the struggles that Emmy faced when he was off the radar...but the couple work through it and find their HFN.

POV This was alternating between Emmy and Luke's POV, but it was mostly in Emmy's. It also alternated between past and present.

Overall Pace of Story Good. No slow points and the love was there from the start of the story, so there was no instalove going on.

H rating 2 stars. Luke. He messed up bad. I understand that he was scared and was trying to protect Emmy, but he was wrong. The things he did are things you just don't do to someone you love...in my mind they are kinda unforgivable. I did appreciate how he committed to winning everyone back.

h rating 3 stars. Emerson/Emmy. She was ok. I feel like especially at the end, she forgave him so abruptly that it was kind of confusing...but that might be because I felt that he had dug himself too deep in a hole and should not be able to get out.

Angst level Moderate. No tissues used by me, but I see where someone might get emotional at times.

Heat level Low. There are some sexy times, but it is minimal.

Closure This was a HFN ending because the couple only talk about what they want out of the relationship, but do not have any commitments made
