Tucker Reynolds is a rising star in country music. The people from his record label tell him he's destined to be one of the greats—but only if he fits the "good ol' boy" image country fans expect from him. The trouble is, that's not the kind of man's man Tucker really wants to be. Forced into an unsavory relationship with a record executive and frustrated by his regrettably platonic relationship with his best friend and guitarist, Mags Palmer, Tucker turns to kinky sex with male prostitutes for release. Things hit Tucker's limit when one of Tucker's bandmates, Jess Grayville, begins to suspect what's going on, and puts himself in danger to protect Tucker. Desperate for a way out of his troubles, Tucker realizes only honesty, love, and a true song can save himself and the man who stands by him. (M/M)
Song of the Lonesome Cowboy Lynn Kelling Books
At first, tough to get into. You feel out of your depth. Hang in there-and you will be rewarded. Emotional and meant to teach us all how to be who we are. This was a far deeper, more emotional book then it might at first appear. There is a lot of dark in here - and exploration of it. It's got noncon scenes and abuse - though it is not gratuitous at all and is part of the story line. Tucker and Jess - just really great together. The back drop of country music didn't hurt at all. I was wishing we could have more of these two - and it seems like these are sort of related to her other works which spurs me on to read more of them!

Song of the Lonesome Cowboy Lynn Kelling Books Reviews
This is not an easy review to write because Lynn Kelling has definitely put her country superstar, Tucker Reynolds, through some extremely hard times, so it was a challenging read. There are triggers in this that may be difficult for some readers...rape, non con, suicidal thoughts, sadistic torture, humiliation, co-dependency issues, brainwashing, depression...the warnings are there, but if you can push through those barriers, what you also get is a beautifully written, extraordinary story that will wring your emotions dry.
Dark, melancholic and desolate, this is the story of a man teetering on the edge of a major mental breakdown, so to use the word 'enjoyment' just seems wrong. How do you 'enjoy' watching some one else's torment? You don't; but what you can do is appreciate the hell out of how an author who can bring the feel of mental suffering to life within minutes of introducing you to a character, and immediately portray their anguish and pain, by giving them a distinctive voice that draws you in and totally immerses you in their narration.
Tucker Reynolds is a tortured soul. Under the influence of a sadistic, twisted bastard who took a young, fairly innocent, starry eyed musician, and manipulated his dreams for his own sick pleasures; Tucker is caught in a nightmare situation that's not just about trying to free himself from this heinous excuse for a man, who sucks the very soul out of him, but is also entwined with another man who holds Tucker's heart in a vice...his straight, co-dependent, obtuse best friend Mags a guy who started out as his protector but is now just an emotional anchor around Tuck's neck, stopping him from moving on from their unhealthy friendship because Mag's only sees what he wants to see. Never looking past his own needs and wants, he can't give gay Tucker the love he so desperately wants but at the same time he won't let him go either. Oblivious to the horrors his best friend is going through, Mag's is unaware that their relationship has turned and it's now Tuck who has become the protector, shielding him so he can continue to give Mags the fame he revels in and all the trappings that come with it. But the price Tucker is paying is immense!
"I never told Mag's he'd failed, but it was true. Letting my best friend believe in his success at protecting me was a gift I gave him. The truth would have driven him mad."
The one beacon of light in all this mess is lovely, kind hearted Jess Grayville. A member of the band but on the periphery of what's happening, he sees his lead singer spiralling out of control and intuitively reaches out, gently coaxing Tucker to open up to him. The beauty of Jess is that he isn't doing any of it for personal gain. He puts no expectations into his relationship with Tucker, as his feelings are genuinely heartfelt, but it's hard for Tuck to open up to anyone close to him. The only release he ever really gets, is time spent with the prostitutes he secretly hires from 'The Company' to satisfy the cravings he has to keep hidden from the music world, so he and his band mates can stay successful in the business. But he's also constantly looking over his shoulder, waiting for Mr Briant (the monster who has total control over him) to surface. Always in the background, leaving chilling reminders that he's around to exact his particular form of depravity on him whenever he wants, Tucker is trapped. OMG! I hate that man with a passion!
Poor, poor Tucker! All the way through I honestly couldn't comprehend how he was ever going to survive and not come out the other side totally unhinged. It's a relentless emotional onslaught with some hard limits but thankfully after all the intensity, it does end with love, hope and healing for him, making the conclusion hard won but satisfying. Tucks plaintive voice and Lynn Kelling's excellent writing made this a compelling read, and a story that I'm still thinking about after finishing. There's a couple of m/f/m sex scenes towards the beginning which aren't my cup of tea...unfortunately I admit, being a m/m snob, I don't enjoy lady bits in my books...but in this case they're crucial to the story so I went with the flow. Overall, an exhausting read but a good one!
4.5 Stars Rounded Up
Non-spoiler review.
Tucker Reynolds is a twenty seven year old closeted country singer and guitarist. Closeted for several reasons, mostly because it won't do to have a gay country singer - women want to fantasise about being with Tucker, the sexy boy next door, and men like to think the music playing in their pick-ups is from a heterosexual male. His fame came six years ago, and built, after being signed by a label that knew their mark - handsome, talented, an easy, submissive young man. He pays a high price for a recording contract and to have his school friend, Magnusson 'Mags' Palmer, signed with him. Along the way they collect another band member, Gray, or Jess Grayville. And right on the periphery is Jovie, a soulful vocalist.
Mags is a wild child, has been since school, but he's always stood up for Tucker and Tucker feels a sense of gratitude and obligation, a hero-worship, in return. Because Mags comes from a poor family, the best way Tuck knows how to pay him back is to have him in their band making money, with none of the ugly...contractual arrangements that Tuck has been through to get them there.
While Mags likes to party hard, and live the music-star lifestyle, Tuck is not so keen on he way he does it. But Tuck lusts after, loves, Mags - even if that means threesome with girls. Anything that gets him to see Mags naked and in the throes of sexual bliss means Tuck has wanted in. But he is finding Mags and his behaviour more self-absorbed and annoying lately. Can't Mags see that his best friend is hurting? Can't he stop using these women? Can't he see Tuck? Meanwhile, Jess, the married man of the band, is noticing that there is tension between Tuck and Mags. He also notices things are off-balance with Tuck, and he wants Tuck to know he can talk to him about it any time.
"Never noticed your scars before," he said quietly.
Exhaling heavily, I let the comment sink in before answering. "Yeah, I don't like to see 'em."
"Accident or intentional?"
"They're old, okay? I'm fine."
"They don't look old," he countered. There was a subtle note of fear in his voice. which only made me feel bad for causing him to worry.
Tuck can't talk to Jess, he is so nice, so decent...so normal. He cannot let his southern façade down, not for a minute, not at all, because ugly, soul-destroying cracks will open. He'll leach his dangerous toxicity onto him.
'That ring did catch my eye on a regular basis, though, shining there like proof of how pure and normal Jess was. It set him above the likes of me and my slutty guitarist, who seemed to be constantly down in the dirt doing shameful things while Jess was a good, loyal, humble husband.'
However, Tuck has more than N. Briant - who sends him flowers and champagne, and creepy cards, no matter where he is - on his mind. He pays for sex from an establishment called The Company. He likes sex a certain way and they can cater, he can deal with the fallout about how he feels later, after being with them. Anything that hurts Tucker, and makes him feel more guilt, Tucker is into. It's what he understands at a core level. It fuels the negativity and the state he's in, to the point where he takes off for a while on his own; where he's at his most creative but most dangerous.
Well, I knew it. It's Lynn Kelling so there's a whole lot of something lurking in this book. I do suggest you have a look at the tags at the bottom of the Forbidden Fiction page. If you are bothered by this, there is also sex with females in this book, it's predominantly in the first part, not drawn out, and always takes place within a ménage with another male, like Mags...
'She was moaning softly, rocking slightly back and forward on his fingers, her big pierced breasts bouncing. It was him I watched, though, the way he knew just how to thrust his fingers inside her, and the way his bare ass clenched up with each downward stoke of his dark, thick shaft. He'd always had the prettiest c@ck I'd ever seen.'
The antagonist is slimy, and made my skin crawl with his sickly-sweet 'good old boy' voice and manner, masking a whole lot of nasty. There are triggers - non-con, torture and more -. I'll never look at a pen the same way again
I can't go into a lot of detail about Song of the Lonesome Cowboy, but I'll say that it hits some dark and deeply perverse and twisted notes. If you have some triggers - like non-con - it could be an issue. There are some interesting relationship dynamics in the book. There's a darkness that surrounds it, but it also has some sweeter moments and the book gave me a seesawing of emotions throughout. It does have a HEA, that I will say, but the characters concerned have to work for it.

I loved and hated this book.
I loved the characters; Tucker, Mags, Jess, Jovie and Angel. I hated Nathan. I could have killed myself, and I'm not a violent person by any stretch of the imagination. I know you just have to watch the news to realize how cruel we can be to each other, but I'll never resign myself to accepting it.
I loved how Mags and Tucker were there for each other. I hated how their codependence forced them apart.
I loved the method Tucker, Jess and Jovie used to make their music. I hated how Mags was able to see the real Tucker.
I love how I've discovered a new author and new characters. I hate that books have to end.
