Triple Zero Star Wars Republic Commando Book 2 Karen Traviss Books

It's one of the best Star Wars books I've ever read, I connected with the characters and I praise Karen for making them truly unique individuals in spite of the fact of being clones! And I absolutely loved the little philosophical concerns that are expressed in the book, just as I enjoy them in the Wess'har series (pick up those books by Karen Traviss, if you enjoy this book, you're gonna love them)...

I love when an author can make me stop reading and think about what I'm reading and yet wanting not to put the book away and lying to myself "I'll read just to the end of the chapter... but... how does the next chapter begins?"

Triple Zero Star Wars Republic Commando Book 2 Karen Traviss Books Reviews

Traviss pours real life into her series of Republic Commando books. More than writing and developing characters, she has established a unique people group. The warrior race of Mandolorians has never seen such a complete and in depth look into their history, language, or customs. And what is more refreshing is how all those elements don't feel forced, but rather fluid and integrated. For a series that started as clearly only an adaptation of a video game, these books have grown an established mythology of their own. Triple Zero marks a shift in story arch from a stand alone adaptation to a full (yet sadly unfinished) series. Full of action, adventure, culture, and grey lines, this series takes a view of the Clone Wars unlike any other Star Wars publications. Trust me, this is no cheesy story. It is by far some of the best Star Wars literature to date.
I was truly impressed with this entire series. It was a refreshing break from the normal Jedi/Sith drama and battle for the galaxy stuff. As an Army Vet I was impressed with the insight into the life of the clone troopers, as well as the ever present strain between politicians and the soldiers whose lives are effected by policy from those who never see combat and have no idea of it's nuances. I also really enjoyed learning more about Mandalorian culture. The KOTOR video games do a real smear campaign on this militaristic warrior culture that I always expected as biased. It was nice to see Mandalorian characters draw the comparisons between themselves and the Jedi, as well as in the end walking very Jedi like paths. I put the entire series at the top of my all time favorites list.

The only down side is that the series was never finished. It is sad when corporate politics gets in the way of our entertainment, but that is the way of business all too often. I talked with the author, Karen Traviss, via email and she was a pleasant and honest conversationalist. A mixture of contract/pay issues as well as a reboot of official Star Wars canon and timeline led to the final book after "501st-Imperial Commando" never even being written. Alas this is not the first time that the Dark Lord George Lucas has forced his will and dominion over us loyal Fanboys. Unfortunately we have grown used to his meddlesome ways. At least we have the majority of this wonderful body of work and I certainly recommend this series to any Star Wars fan, as well as fans of miltary fiction in general. I promise you will not be disappointed. Karen Traviss, missioned accomlished (but not completed).
Well written and easy to read.
The only problem I have is one that I know really doesn't matter, but I obsess over the strangest things. My previously purchased copies of hard contact and order 66 are the original mass market covers without the "Legends" gold band at the top. However, now that triple zero, true colors and imperial commando 501st have arrived to me they are the legends versions. Now I have a non-matching set sitting on my bookshelf. To make it worse, they all have the stupid disney logo on the back cover. (And it is a logo now. It's no longer a man's name.) I wish I would have looked into it more before I ordered them all. Ebay does have the original cover versions. So if you're looking for originals.... you know where to go.
In the second book in the Republic Commando series, we take a deeper look into Etain's growth from a failing, inconsequential, and pathetic padawan into a warrior who dons armor, weilds two lightsabers, and cares for her troops. The focus of this book on Etain's personal development really gives readers their first look into a Jedi Knight that isn't single minded, boring, and completely self-absorbed.

Etain has to struggle with some very real problems in this novel, and she is forced to decide just how far she's willing to allow the ends to justify the means to keep her troops safe. Along the way, she also grows closer to a commando named Darman, and we see that relationship challenge the status-quo for not only the Jedi and the commando, but the squad as a whole.

The author does a great job in not only keeping you engaged in the story line (counter terrorism operations), and the development of the two primary protagonists (Etain and Darman), but also in defining what clone life was like during the Clone Wars. Clone life was heavily influenced by Mandalorian society, so readers are given an opportunity to glean some more history of the Mandalorians that isn't possible anywhere else except KOTOR.

The first book of this series was pretty spot on, but it was an introduction, and book two really does a lot to carry the story forward. I was a little concerned during the transition between the books, but the old gang was reunited through a series of unfortunate events, and the story arc picked up right where it left off.

For those of you who have been reading my reviews as I work my way through the Star Wars Extended Universe from "Dawn of the Jedi" to the Thrawn Trilogy, you'll know that Darth Bane has been the gold standard in which I've been gauging all other storylines. Republic Commando is quickly shaping up to be a rival for that illustrious title.

I've still got two more books to read in this series, but so far this is a can't miss story line
