The Man Who Never Missed Steve Perry 9780441519187 Books Reviews
This was an interesting book for the esoteric idea of the martial path, but I picked it up as a recommendation after I read the Black Company Series by Glen Cook, and it fell short there. This is a good book, and I will read the series to learn more about Perry's universe he created, and the martial path. His characters are interesting. But I was looking for a fantasy setting and mercenary band. Perry is an excellent writer of course, so if you are looking for a Scifi universe with a "lone wolf" assassin type character this is a good book for you.
I loved this book and series so much that I have bought this book five different times so I have always had a copy in my most preffered format. I consider it one of the greatest books and series in all of sci-fi writing.
Book 1 of Perry's seminal trilogy. A bit of a guilty treat and rollicking good fun (though not without some depth too).
Politics, mysticism, gadgets, codes of honor, love, sex, and death. Not to mention a secret martial art hidden within a training "dance" that seems to be a blend of Aikido & Silat. This series has it all.
Highly recommended! Or, too put it another way... I've read everything Steve Perry has ever published.
Masterful! Every aspect of this world stimulates my thoughts... the con-fed, the servants of the shroud, the matadors, the flex, the martial arts, philosophy... and the Spetsdod's rule.
Khadaji can be a little unbelievable at times, but I think maybe that's the point.
I find it even more impressive how well Mr. Perry picked up an old thread from a book that wasn't exactly supposed to be an epic and turned it into just that, creating a timeline including prequels and sequels all at once. Or at least that's what the chronological timeline reads like to me... or maybe I'm just rambling.
The novel is awesome, the series is exciting! Order them all!
The Man Who Never Missed
(1985)
This is the first book in the series called Matador by Steve Perry.
Emile Khadaji was the founder of the Shama Freedom Forces (the Shamba Scum) and, in fact, the only member thereof. Giving new meaning to the phrase "an Army of One".
Warning Violence, adult content, and some profanity, plus one h@ll of a book..
Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys martial arts in a science fiction setting.
The rebellion proper begins in The Man Who Never Missed, in which Emile Khadaji deserts from the Confederation military after a particularly bloody battle and experiencing Relampago, a religious experience, eventually joining up with a bartending martial artist monk named Pen, who teaches Khadaji the art used by his order, Sumito ("The 97 steps"), before setting him on his own path."
You probably ought to be old enough to join the Army to read this.
Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys martial arts in a science fiction setting.
The next book in thia series is Matadora See my Listmania (STEVE PERRY BOOKS THE MATADOR SERIES) for the complete list.
Gunner February, 2010
I first read this one way back in the 90s. Came across it on and decided to read it again. I had completely forgotten how much I enjoy the Matador novels. This is butt-kicking, page-turning, popcorn-munching fun!
This is an awesome series and timeline in a terrific universe-construct. Perry has written lots of books in it as well, so you can really dig in.
Great, well-developed characters both male and female, fun and fairly believable martial-arts content, solid story sub-arcs in the context of a much greater, multi-volume super-arc, considerable humor, a reasonable, not-particularly explicit amount of sensuality, fascinating locations and a really nicely done sprinkling of interesting and mostly-plausible technologies.
On the one hand, this isn't "fine literature", but on the other, I would have been delighted it they had made this series into a movie instead of Star Wars, and I say that as a fellow who really likes Star Wars.
One tip Be sure to read the books in order. It definitely matters, there's a significant timeline underlying it all.
Highly, highly recommended.
